Fund Purpose Provides funds to further the education of North Harrison High School students who have participated in athletics and/or agricultural activities.
Fund Story The Howard H. Haub Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 at the Harrison County Community Foundation to provide scholarship support to graduating seniors at North Harrison High School.
Howard H. Haub was born January 1, 1912, the son of George H. Haub and Lucy C. Klinker Haub. He was a farmer and a bus driver for the North Harrison Community School Corporation. He was a lifelong resident of New Salisbury, Indiana and graduated from New Salisbury High School Class of 1931. He was married to the former Etta Voyles.
Howard Haub was the Jackson Township Trustee from 1951 to 1958 and served on the board of trustees for the North Harrison Community School Corporation from July 1978 to June 1994, a total of 16 years. He drove a school bus for the Corporation from the 1959-1960 school year until May 1977, a total of 18 school years. Howard was a World War II Veteran and a member of Harrison American Legion Post 123 and Mount Tabor Church of Christ in Depauw.
He loved his community, the North Harrison School Corporation, the faculty, and most of all, the many students. “Howard and his wife had no children of their own. All of the school kids were his kids,” said Monty Schneider, North Harrison Community School Corporation Superintendent. Howard was a regular at many school athletic events. Monty Schneider was a very close friend of Howard and said that Howard was still interested in the school and activities even after he was no longer on the school board. Monty drove him to many of the school sporting events, up to near the time of his death.
Bill Thomas was a very close friend of Howard Haub. He commented that Howard was “very dedicated to children; always helping to better kids in anyway.”
Howard passed away January 14, 2000 at the age of 88 from heart complications. He is buried at the Central Barren Cemetery in New Salisbury.
Before his death, Howard designated from his estate this endowment at the Harrison County Community Foundation to provide six scholarships each year to graduates of North Harrison High School.
The Howard H. Haub Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to: Two deserving high school male students who have participated in school athletics; Two deserving high school female students who have participated in school athletics; and Two deserving high school students who have participated in school related agricultural activities.
The Howard H. Haub Scholarship Fund is certainly a reflection of the dedication Howard had to his community and the North Harrison Community School Corporation. The Harrison County Community Foundation is honored to hold this scholarship fund.
