Fund Purpose Provides educational scholarships for graduating seniors of Corydon Central High School who have applied and been accepted at an accredited public or private institution of higher learning.
Fund Story The family of Gary K. Haub created this fund to honor his memory and 40 years of teaching and coaching in the South Harrison School Corporation. The Gary Haub Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Corydon Central High School graduating senior who has shown good character, as well as the capacity for hard work and dedication in the classroom and the community.
Gary was born on September 3, 1947 in New Albany, Indiana to B. Kenneth and Rita Baumann Haub. He grew up in Palmyra, Indiana along with his sister, Teri. Gary graduated from Morgan High School in 1965 where he played basketball and baseball for the Morgan Raiders. After graduation he was recruited to play basketball at Texas Wesleyan College in Ft. Worth, Texas. He graduated with a degree in Education and taught Physical Education at Wedgewood Jr. High in Ft. Worth before returning to Indiana to teach.
During his career at Corydon, he developed techniques to assure success not only in the classroom but also throughout adulthood. Many times he would inspire his students at test time by flicking the classroom lights and shouting, “Are you ready to rumble?” By having characters such as Math Man and Caz, he made math fun and memorable.
Over the years he coached football at the Junior High School and both boys and girls basketball from sixth grade to high school. Gary was an avid Indiana University fan. While watching the NCAA National Championship Game in 1987, he noticed how badly the Syracuse team was missing their free throws. He then invented a shooting bracelet, “The Shooting T” that his players could strap on their wrist during basketball practice to teach a more consistent follow through shot when shooting free throws.
Gary was married to Terry Parks Haub for 36 years. They had two children, Ashley R. Haub Cassell and Eric K. Haub. He also loved and cherished his two granddaughters Avery and Carson, always eager to share his love of nature with them.
