Fund Purpose Provides scholarships to graduates of Corydon Central High School pursuing a career in education who are accepted into and attend a certified vocational training program or accredited two- or four-year public or private institution.
Fund Story The Corydon Lions Club Dan Hardsaw Memorial Scholarship Fund was established with the Harrison County Community Foundation in October 2000. The Fund provides scholarships for graduating seniors of South Harrison Community School Corporation.
Daniel W. Hardsaw was born February 3, 1912. He attended Oakland City College and worked for thirty-five years as a teacher in the South Harrison Community School Corporation. Dan was married to the former Celena Faye Coffman and he and Celena were lifetime members of the Corydon Presbyterian Church. Dan and Celena had one daughter, Judith Marlene Myers. Dan was also a member of the Corydon Lions Club, Corydon Dollars for Scholars, NEA and ISTA-R.
Dan was a fisherman, a master gardener and a carpenter. When he was not working at the school throughout the summer he worked as a carpenter. He built his own home. “Dan was a super good guy,” said long time friend Harold Dillman. Harold knew Dan through their church, the Corydon Lions Club and they were “fishing buddies.”
Virgil Carpenter was also a friend of Dan Hardsaw’s. He said Dan was the one who encouraged him to join the Lions Club. Having told Virgil he would buy him lunch one day, Dan took Virgil to a Lions Club luncheon and Virgil has been involved in the club ever since. “Everybody loved Dan Hardsaw. He was a kind and gentle man,” said Virgil.
Dan died July 4, 1998 and is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Lions Clubs International was established in 1917. The Corydon Lions Club was established in 1988, with some 35 charter members. The members are active in community service, providing a shelter house and lighting at Rice Island, playground equipment for Governor Frank O’Bannon Park, and eyeglasses for low-income students in the community. The first Corydon Lions Club scholarship was awarded in 1992 and when Dan passed away the Club decided to honor him with this continuing scholarship in his name.
A long time friend and a “super good guy,” Dan Hardsaw will certainly be remembered through this scholarship fund.
