Fund Purpose Provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Corydon Central High School accepted into and attending an accredited creative arts studies or industrial arts program of study supporting pursuits such as glass art, music, sculpture or painting.
Fund Story The Zimmerman Family of Corydon created the Zimmerman Family Memorial Scholarship in at the Harrison County Community Foundation in 2008. The Zimmerman Family Scholarship Fund provides educational scholarships for Harrison County resident graduating seniors of Corydon Central High School who are accepted into and attend an accredited creative Arts Studies or Industrial Arts program of study. These scholarships may support arts educational pursuits such as glass art, music, sculpture, or painting.
In May 1961, Joe Zimmerman opened Zimmerman Art Glass Company, after learning the glass making skills passed on from his grandfather, Frederick and his father, Victor. Joe passed the family tradition to the fourth generation of Zimmerman glass artisans, sons Barton and Kerry who began working at Joe's factory in 1983. After Joe passed away in 1986, Bart and Kerry continued operating Zimmerman Art Glass Company. Joe and wife, Callie, also had a daughter, Josie. Today, Joe's family includes 5 grandchildren. "We are really excited about this scholarship, "said Callie Zimmerman. â€ÂIt will be very worthwhile to a deserving person and we are looking forward to this yearly award," added Callie.
All donations received to open the fund were in memory of Bart Zimmerman who passed away in August 2008. Bart Zimmerman married Janet Miller in 1982. "The outpouring of love, kindness, and remembrance from our friends and family of Harrison County is an overwhelming reflection of the goodness of the people in our community,'' said Janet. â€ÂBradley, Nicole, and I are grateful to everyone. Bart would be happy to know that this scholarship will be awarded to a student who has artistic or mechanical talent that would allow that talent to be 'tapped into' and nurtured."
The selection of recommended recipients is made annually by the committee designated by Corydon Central High School for graduating senior scholarship awards. "Bart Zimmerman was a skilled craftsman who shared his love and knowledge of his profession with countless students, “said Becky Eckart, Corydon Central High School Counselor." To provide a scholarship to students pursuing a career in art and/or to further their vocational training is a wonderful tribute to Bart and his family."
