Fund Story The Sandra Albin LaDuke Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Corydon Central High School who are pursuing a degree in elementary education. Touched by Sandy’s compassion as well as her spirit, her mother, family, and friends decided to honor her by creating the fund.
Sandy was born May 18, 1940 in Harrison County, to Eleanor Timberlake Albin and Vallas M. Albin. She was a 1958 graduate of Corydon Central High School, an excellent student and a cheerleader. Sandy was a member of the Corydon Methodist Church and Kappa Kappa Kappa Sorority. She graduated from Indiana University in 1961 and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education. Sandy was a dedicated teacher for 35 years in both New Albany Floyd County and Corydon Elementary Schools. Always a professional, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Society. Sandy retired from teaching in 1998.
Education was not a stranger to Sandy LaDuke. Her mother, Eleanor, taught for 34 years in the South Harrison Community School Corporation. Sandy, her sisters, Sarah and Margaret followed in their mother’s footsteps.
Sandy met Jim LaDuke at Indiana University and they were married on June 22, 1968. Together they had two children, Eleanor (Ellie) Margaret LaDuke Avery and James (Jamie) Albin LaDuke, who are also Indiana University Alumni. They had 4 grandchildren, Jarrett and Josie LaDuke, and Robert (Duke) and Savannah Avery.
Sandy was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She touched many lives. She loved to read, not just for her own pleasure and relaxation, but especially to her grandchildren. Sandy was an excellent cook and collected numerous cook books. Sandy and her family enjoyed Indiana University sports. She was skilled in caring for her flower garden and had beautiful flowers blooming spring, summer and fall. She loved to fish, especially with her father, Vallas. She also worked in her father’s jewelry store and was an excellent salesperson and decorator. An animal lover, her dog Chloe was her constant companion.
Sandy left an “afterglow of smiles” when she passed away on September 18, 2010.
