Fund Story
The Phyllis and Leland Krush Family Builder’s Fund was established in December 2014. The fund provides support as directed by the Harrison County Community Foundation Board of Directors for programs or activities that fulfill charitable or other exempt purposes benefiting Harrison County.
Phyllis grew up in Posey County, Indiana and graduated from Mater Dei High School in Evansville in 1969. Leland, a lifelong resident of Harrison County, graduated from Morgan Township High School in 1966.
Phyllis and Leland met through Phyllis’s sister while Leland was attending the University of Evansville and Phyllis was attending Indiana State University – Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana). Leland earned a Bachelor of Science in finance in 1970, and Phyllis earned her Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1972. They were married on June 10, 1972.
Phyllis and Leland live in New Salisbury and have one daughter, Taralee Krush Smith. Taralee is married to Daniel Smith and they have three children: Kinlee, Gannon and Embree.
Phyllis is a Certified Public Accountant and retired from Monroe Shine & Co. She worked in the accounting field for more than 30 years and she still helps people with their taxes. In addition to accounting, Phyllis’s job enabled her to work with estate planning and trusts.
Leland worked at Meade Containers before becoming the branch manager of the Farm Bureau co-op in Salem. He farmed and later drove a school bus for North Harrison Community School Corporation.
Phyllis and Leland attend Central Barren United Methodist Church. They are also members of the New Salisbury Lions Club, and Phyllis is a member of the American Society of Women Accountants.
Phyllis joined the HCCF Advisory Council in 2010 and became a member of the Board of Directors in 2013. She has served on the Finance Committee and the Audit Committee.
Phyllis is amazed by the different things HCCF does for Harrison County.
“It’s good for Harrison County, because I think there are a lot of things that wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the community foundation,” she said. “There’s a lot of needs in the county and people don’t realize what the need is.”
Phyllis and Leland learned about builder’s funds when HCCF participated in Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Gift VI initiative, a challenge grant that encouraged community foundations throughout Indiana to raise unrestricted funds. In addition to the initiative, Phyllis and Leland established their builder’s fund because HCCF can use the money for any needs in Harrison County.
“We’ve been blessed,” Phyllis said, “and we just want to pass it on and share it.”
