Fund Purpose Provides educational scholarships for Corydon Central High School graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement with a GPA of 3.2 to 3.9.
Fund Story The Dr. Leonard Waite Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded by his wife, Edith Kirkwood Waite, to honor Len’s legacy as a family man, active community member, and educator. A scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate from Corydon Central High School who, like a young Len, would benefit from some encouragement and financial assistance to pursue higher education.
Len studied chemistry, mathematics, and pharmacology, and in 1969 earned a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri—an accomplishment that defied his humble upbringing in rural Pennsylvania. He dedicated 41 years of his life to teaching on the faculty of the medical and dental schools at the University of Louisville.
Len spent much of his 43 years in Corydon striving to better the town. The positions he held in the community were numerous and noteworthy: president of the Corydon Planning and Zoning Commission, and vice chair of the appeals board; chairman of the Harrison County Public Library Board of Directors; member and former chairman of the Harrison County Park Department; trustee and board president at Corydon Christian Church Disciples of Christ; and contributing member of Corydon Optimist Club. Foremost, he was dedicated to his family.
He selflessly devoted most of his time and efforts to others—he saw the best in everyone and wanted to see them thrive. This fund enables Len to continue to give to the residents of Corydon, in the hope that new generations will be inspired by his example to lead lives dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the assistance of others.
