Fund Story The Joe E. Lieber Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in June 2016 to provide educational scholarships to Lanesville High School graduates. Joe E. Lieber Memorial Scholarship recipients must have a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5; must have participated in three consecutive years of high school basketball, baseball, or soccer; and must have volunteered in community service.
Joey Edward Lieber was born on Christmas Day 1964 to William and Shirley Lieber. He was one of four children, having two brothers and one sister. Joe loved his immediate and extended family. He was a father, a son, a husband, a brother, a confidante and a true friend. Joe had three sons, and he also had a stepdaughter and nieces and nephews that he thought of as his own. He took pride in watching them grow, learn and play sports, and he loved spending time with them outdoors.
Sports and exercise were important to Joe. He played basketball at St. John’s Lutheran School, and he played basketball and baseball at Lanesville High School. Joe was a member of the basketball team that held the best record in Lanesville history for years.
Joe greatly respected education. He was one of those who genuinely knew something about everything, and he loved to read historical nonfiction and biographies. Joe graduated from Lanesville High School in 1983. After graduating from high school, he earned a B.S. in Business Administration from IU Southeast, and he later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Webster University while working full time and earning excellent grades.
Joe was active in the Lanesville community, which he loved. He made friends easily, and he was outgoing, considerate, compassionate and loyal. He was a very kind and gentle man, never holding a grudge.
Joe worked a variety of jobs. He eventually started at FireKing International as a customer service representative before becoming the customer service manager. Later, Joe went on to work at a national hospital supply company, RecoverCare, in Louisville.
Joe knew Jesus as his Savior and that everlasting life is reserved for those who die in faith. Joe taught his youngest to pray the common table prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus” in German. Joe’s family and friends are confident that he is rejoicing with his Savior now because of his strong faith.
Joe was a picture of health for 50 years before being diagnosed with leukemia in May 2015. Joe would say it was in the Lord’s hands. He maintained his smile and good demeanor and he never complained. He breathed his last breath on July 29, 2015.
Joe was a fighter, lover of life, and man of faith. He is missed immensely by his friends and family. The Joe E. Lieber Memorial Scholarship Fund is their way of keeping his memory alive.
