Provides support to the YMCA of Harrison County, Inc.

Fund Story

The YMCA of Harrison County began in 2000 as a "re-birth" of the Harrison County Sink or Swim, with a small group of people interested in building an indoor swimming pool in Harrison County.

In May 2001, the newly formed YMCA of Harrison County launched its Founders Campaign and with determination and dedication, board members and other volunteers raised more than $300,000 in 11 weeks. These donations were matched by the Harrison County Community Foundation resulting in a $309,000 permanent endowment fund and the $300,000 required to obtain the charter from the YMCA of the USA.

Fundraising continued through July 2004 with the YMCA of Harrison County opening in a $6.5 million building and soccer complex on 30 acres at 198 Jenkins Court in Corydon. 

The YMCA of Harrison County provides activity and membership fees for low-income families of Harrison County. Thousands of lives are being touched by the programs offered by the YMCA of Harrison County. The YMCA aims for all residents of Harrison County to enjoy their programs regardless of income level.

The YMCA of Harrison County also helps to provide free swim lessons to every third-grader in Harrison County. The childhood years are a time for self development and self discovery. Swimming is just one of the many recreational activities the YMCA of Harrison County has to offer. Swimming builds self confidence, a key component of mental and physical development, and it is important to teach youth the benefits of physical activity. The YMCA of Harrison County is thrilled to be able to offer these free lessons to our third graders.The YMCA's goal is that through these free swim lessons, eventually everyone in Harrison County will be safe around water.

The realization of a YMCA in Harrison County taught us all that this community can work together and achieve great dreams.Through this endowment the dream continues, building strong kids, strong families and a strong Harrison County.

2021: To support operations and capital expenses including therapy and lap pool monitoring systems, therapy pool compressor repairs, HVAC replacement, mirror replacement in Wellness Center, water bottle filling station, and parking lot light repairs; Support indoor painting, parking lot striping, new therapy pool grates, tile and carpet cleaning, and floor resurfacing
