Fund Story The friends, family and associates of Earl Saulman celebrate his life with this memorial scholarship. The Earl Saulman Memorial Scholarship Fund is held at the Harrison County Community Foundation and provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Corydon Central High School where Mr. Saulman had served as principal and was a co-founder of the Corydon Central Dollars for Scholars Program.
Earl Oscar Saulman was born October 18, 1924. He was the son of Oscar and Mary Viola Schickles Saulman. Raised in Corydon, he was a 1943 graduate of Corydon Central High School. Earl enlisted in the United States Navy after high school and served in World War II as an Aviation Radioman 3rd Class on a Dive Bomber. He received a Purple Heart and an Air Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December 1945.
Earl earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts at Western Kentucky State College in 1951 and taught industrial arts and math in the Kentucky towns of Russellville and then Bardstown. He also earned a master’s degree in education administration at Western Kentucky. Earl earned a Specialist in Education Diploma from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1973.
He married the former Betty Fisher on April 17, 1978, a happy 26 year marriage. “We had a good life together,” said Betty. Earl had two stepsons, Leonard and Brian Douglas Byrn. Earl and Betty were members of the Corydon Presbyterian Church. Betty said that Earl loved to read and he was a big fan of Charlie Pride’s music. Earl served as Corydon Central High School principal from 1963 to 1975 and then returned in 1984 after working in the trucking business and serving one year as principal at Laconia Elementary School.
Betty said Earl was very, very proud of the Corydon Central Dollars for Scholars Program, which was created in 1989 by Earl, along with Becky Eckart and Ruth Churchill. He loved the school. “He once said if he had a cut he would bleed black and gold,” said Betty.
Earl retired as principal of Corydon Central High School in 1991. He served on the Harrison County Council from 1992 to 2000. In 1999 he compiled and wrote the history of “Blacks in Harrison County Indiana”. He had been a member of the Indiana State Retired Teachers Association, Duvall Masonic Lodge and the Corydon Rotary Club.
Earl Saulman died September 9, 2004 at the age of 79. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon.
Earl Saulman certainly left his imprint on Harrison County. A countless number of lives have been touched by this faithful servant leader and friend. The Harrison County Community Foundation is proud to be a part of this commemoration.
