Fund Purpose
Provides scholarship support to youth residing in Harrison County, Indiana diagnosed with dyslexia and/or hyper kinesis and utilizing the services of the Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association for tutorial research programs.

Fund Story
The Charles L. Shedd Scholarship Fund was created at the Harrison County Community Foundation in 2005.  The endowment provides scholarship support to youth residing in Harrison County who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and/or hyperkinesis (Attention Deficit Disorder/ADD and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/ADHD) and utilizing the services of the Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association.

The Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association was founded in 1968 by concerned parents and teachers for people with dyslexia and hyperkinesis (ADD and ADHD).  The Shedd program provides educational remediation through highly structured teaching methods and materials utilizing a multi-sensory approach and one-to-one instruction. 

The Southern Indiana Association for Dyslexia, Inc., was founded under the direction of Dr. Charles L. Shedd who authored the materials used with his remediation techniques.  SIAD initiated their remediation of dyslexic and hyperkinetic students in the summer of 1968 with a six-week tutoring program at Hazelwood Junior High School in New Albany.  The pilot program was followed by school year remediation sessions on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings in New Albany, Saturday morning tutoring sessions at Corydon Elementary School, in school and Saturday morning tutoring at Lanesville Public Schools, and summer programs at Georgetown.  As those programs closed, referrals have been made to the Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association in Louisville, Kentucky.  The Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association currently offers Saturday morning programs throughout the school year and an intense summer remediation program.

Sometimes bright children just cannot learn by conventional classroom teaching methods.  The Shedd approach to the remediation of these students is very successful and results in significant gains in reading and comprehension, as well as the self-confidence gained in knowing they can achieve to their potential.  In addition, Math and Social Studies are part of the Shedd summer sessions and good gains in these subjects are also achieved.

It is the wish of the directors of the Southern Indiana Association that Harrison County residents will continue to benefit from this proven remediation.
