Fund Purpose Provides support for educational scholarships for graduating seniors of South Central High School who are accepted into and attend a certified vocational training program. Fund Story The family and friends of Alex Simmons created a scholarship fund at the Harrison County Community Foundation in 2006 to honor and remember Alex. The Alex Simmons Memorial Scholarship Fund will benefit graduating seniors of South Central High School where Alex was a student.
Alex Simmons was a native of Clark County, born Sept. 22, 1989, the son of Kathy and David Simmons. Alex also has a brother and sister-in law, Eric and Melissa Simmons of Brandenburg and a niece, Alicia; His grandparents are Bud and Cletice McRae and Lucille Simmons, all of Elizabeth and Alex had two special friends Melinda and Charity Powell of Brandenburg.
Alex was a freshman at South Central Jr.-Sr. High School where he played Baseball and ran Cross Country. He also enjoyed deer hunting, skate boarding and spending lots of time with his friends. Alex was a member of Buck Grove Baptist Church at Ekron, Ky.
“Alex was a very giving person; always helping others” said his Mother, Kathy Simmons. This is why I wanted to create this scholarship fund. He would be very proud.” Alex was once a member of a Boy Scout Troop in Brandenburg and he participated in food drives around the holidays. His Mother was Vice President of the Meade County Optimist Club and Alex was always working with her on their projects to help children. These are just some of the ways that Alex learned to be such a giving person at such a young age.
The first Alex Simmons Memorial Scholarship was awarded to a member of the Class of 2008, the year Alex would have graduated from South Central High School.
Alex died November 23, 2005 in an automobile accident at the age of 16. He is buried at Evans Landing Cemetery near Elizabeth.
